Thunderstorms killed over 91 people in India

The rainstorms, that lashed four of Indian districts including the mausoleum of Taj Mahal, have killed on Wednesday at least 91 people and injured more than 160 Indians, authorities of the Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh states said today.

“We experienced a fierce storm, with an unusually high wind speed, and as a result, 33 people died in Alwar, Dholpur and Bharatpur districts of Rajasthan,” Hemant Gera, responsible for relief and disaster management in Rajasthan, told Reuters by phone from Jaipur, the state capital.

The knocked down electricity poles have cut off the power supplies in the most affected neighborhoods. The destroyed houses have left dozens of family homeless, and the uprooted trees have blocked roads.

More thunderstorms and strong winds are expected in Uttar Pradesh over the next two days, especially in the northern parts of the state, said the officials today.
